How the price per gram is calculated
Gold is quoted worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, heavier than the everyday ounce of 28.35 grams. From there:
- 24K per gram = ounce price ÷ 31.1034768 × exchange rate
- Other karats = 24K price × karat ÷ 24, so 22K is 91.67% gold, 21K is 87.5%, 18K is 75% and 14K is 58.33%
- Per tola = per-gram price × 11.6638. A tola is 180 grains, exactly 3/8 of a troy ounce.
Worked example: with gold at $4,000 an ounce, 24K gold is 4,000 ÷ 31.1034768 = $128.60 a gram. 22K is 128.603 × 22 ÷ 24 = $117.89 a gram. One tola of 24K is 4,000 × 3/8 = $1,500.
Bid, ask and spread
The big number is the bid: the price at which the market buys gold from you. The ask is the price at which you can buy. The gap between the two is the spread, the cost of trading that is built into the price. On a trading platform, the spread you pay depends on your broker and account type.
When the gold price moves
Gold trades almost around the clock on weekdays. The main US gold futures market (COMEX gold on CME Globex) is open from Sunday 6:00 p.m. to Friday 5:00 p.m. New York time, with a 60-minute break every day starting at 5:00 p.m. (CME contract specifications). Over the weekend this page shows the last price before the close. The price can move sharply when important US figures come out, such as inflation, jobs data and Federal Reserve decisions.
How much does gold move in a day?
We measured it. Over the 64 trading days from 3 August to 30 October 2026, the gap between the day's high and low on COMEX gold futures was $82.10 on a typical day (the median). The quietest day moved $38.30 and the busiest $206.60. In October 2026 alone, the typical day was $62.60.
Over a longer stretch the typical day has grown: on 593 weekdays from 13 June 2024 to 3 November 2026 the median high-to-low gap was $67.20, but $35.60 in 2024, $61.10 in 2025 and $101.30 in 2026 so far (hourly COMEX data, contract-roll jumps removed, a different method from the 64-day figure above, so the numbers differ slightly). A quarter of days were under $42 and a quarter over $98. The stop you choose should fit the day you are trading in: see stop loss for how often stops of $5 to $100 were hit.
For a trader, that matters more than the price itself. On most trading platforms one standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 ounces (check your broker's contract details), so every $1 move is $100 per lot, and a typical $82 day is a swing of about $8,210 on a single lot. That is why position size and a stop loss come before anything else; how to trade gold goes through it step by step, and XAU/USD explained covers lots, margin and hours.
Where the price has been
Gold was $35 an ounce until 1971, averaged $675 in January 1980, fell to $256 in July 1999, and reached a record monthly average of $5,020 in February 2026 before easing. The full table by year, with a chart and the yearly highs and lows since 2001, is on our gold price history page; how far gold moved in 1, 3, 12 and 60 months is in the gold forecast page.
What moves the gold price
- The US dollar. Gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar often weighs on the price and a weaker one supports it.
- Interest rates. Gold pays no interest, so higher expected US rates tend to make it less attractive, and expected rate cuts tend to help it.
- Inflation and economic data. US inflation, jobs and growth figures change what markets expect from the Federal Reserve.
- Fear and uncertainty. In a crisis, many investors buy gold as a safe haven.
- Central banks. Central banks bought 1,050.8 tonnes of gold in 2023 and 1,044.6 tonnes in 2024, according to the World Gold Council.
Buying gold vs trading the gold price
Buying coins or bars means you own the metal. Trading XAU/USD with a broker means you make or lose money from the price moving, without owning any gold. Trading usually uses leverage, which makes both gains and losses bigger, and many people lose money. If you want to learn, start with how to start trading gold with a small amount.

Questions people ask

Why does a jeweller charge more than the spot price?
The spot price is for raw gold. Jewellers and dealers add making charges and their own margin, and many countries add sales tax or VAT. When you sell, you usually get less than spot.
Is the gold market open on weekends?
No. Gold trades from Sunday evening to Friday evening New York time, with a short break each day. On weekends this page shows the last price before the close.
